The founder Oscar Aristides Ortiz de la Renta Fiallo professionally known as Oscar de La Renta established his eponymous brand in 1965. He was the youngest of seven siblings and was born in the Dominican Republic in 1933. Before founding his company he learnt his skill through an apprenticeship with world renowned Cristobal Balenciaga. Following this, in 1960 he moved to Paris to work as a couture assistant at Lanvin. Once he launched his own company, it gained instant recognition and he won the 1967 and 1968 Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award. He has dressed some of the most famous and powerful women, of which 3 were Frist Ladies of the United States.
His style centres on vibrancy and floral motifs using luxurious fabrics, his goal was to encourage women to look and feel confident. The brand first introduced fragrances in 1977, Oscar’s for women, which remains a best-selling perfume till this day.
